Types of Technology

Technology is a broad term, encompassing all of the tools used by humankind to enhance culture and life as we know it. This technology can be as simple as a tool to communicate with others, but also includes everything from a computer to a robot. Technology can improve lives and allow for new opportunities, but it can also cause harm. It is important to understand the different types of technology and how they function in order to make the best use of them.

Inclusion Technology

Incorporating technology into the classroom can help teachers provide accommodations for students with special needs. For example, students with speech or physical impairments can use voice-recognition software to take notes or write. Teachers can also use tablets or laptops to assess student work. This eliminates the need for grading paper and cuts down on time spent on record-keeping. In addition, students are less likely to misplace these devices than they are books.

Communication Technology

Businesses rely on technology to stay competitive and meet customers’ expectations. A business might use accounting software to automate a process, or it might use temperature sensors to monitor the environment in a production room. These technologies increase productivity and improve customer satisfaction.

Engineers have a unique role in society because they evaluate all technological options to identify costs, benefits, side effects and risks. They also compare different design solutions with respect to economic, market, technical, production and environmental criteria. A successful engineering design takes all constraints into account, striking some reasonable compromise.
